Something you may not have heard a lot aboutt is the Kendall National Violin Competition, a major event in the Australian classical music calendar.

The Kendall National Violin Competition was founded in 1999 by the late Australian luthier Graham Caldersmith OAM, Associate Professor Goetz Richter AM from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and a group of Kendall citizens, led by Keri Levy and Elaine van Kempen.

Throughout its first two decades the annual competition brought many of Australia’s most accomplished young violinists to Kendall. Transforming itself in 2020 into a bi-annual event, the competition is a major event on the Australian classical music calendar.

In its first two decades the competition received support from Forestry Corporation of NSW, private donors and the Kendall community through the Kendall Community Op Shop.

From the beginning the Kendall National Violin Competition has been active as a concert presenter in the community of Kendall, bringing young emerging concert artists to Schools in Kendall and Herons Creek and presenting international and emerging national artists in performance at the Kendall School of Arts as part of the PhiloMusica series.

The competition presented its 22nd competition finals in Kendall in March 2023 and was featured prominently on an ABC TV documentary nationwide.

The Kendall National Violin Competition has become an essential part of the Kendall- and Camden Haven Community sustaining much of its musical and artistic life.

It has a diverse following and audience throughout the Mid-North Coast bringing the joy of music and the performances of Australia’s finest young talent to Kendall. In 2023 the competition welcomed Coastline Credit Union as a major supporter.

This partnership enables the Kendall National Violin Competition to expand its international reach while continuing to contribute powerfully to the musical life of the Camden Haven and Hastings.
